• Het Plafond is genoemd naar een plafond van 25m2 op 3.5 meter hoogte in een in principe lege ruimte van 4.85 x 5 meter

• dat plafond, de vloer en linker zijwand van de ruimte zijn van grijs beton; tegen de rechter zijwand staat een piano; de achterwand van de ruimte is een wit gestucte wand van ± 3.5 x 2.2 meter – daarboven / daarachter verborgen ligt een studeerverdieping

• de ruimte is goed zichtbaar vanaf de straat: aan de voorzijde grenst hij met een grote étalageruit aan het trottoir van de Gedempte Zalmhaven, en aan de rechter zijkant zit nog een tweede, maar veel smaller venster

• Het Plafond is niet een 'white box' galerieruimte, maar onderdeel van een woonhuis – er wordt dus (ook) in geleefd! via Het Plafond is de rest van de woning (studeer- en woongedeelte) toegankelijk

• let op: de grote étalageruit en de witte wand daarachter liggen pal op het zuiden; bij felle zon lijkt ‘binnen’, gezien van buitenaf, veel donkerder dan ‘buiten’; bovendien wordt dan de omgeving in de ruit weerspiegeld… ; hiermee moet je goed rekening houden

• door de goede zichtbaarheid vanaf de straat kent Het Plafond géén vaste openingstijden; in feite is Het Plafond dag en nacht 'open'; in voorkomende gevallen kunnen presentaties ook ‘binnen’ bekeken worden – op afspraak

• de Gedempte Zalmhaven is een straat met veel voorbijgangers – onderweg naar hun werk of gewoon aan de wandel; na jaren activiteiten van Het Plafond weten die inmiddels, dat bij Het Plafond altijd wel iets interessants te zien is; velen blijven even staan om door de vensters naar binnen te turen…

• daarom vinden wij het belangrijk dat presentaties bij Het Plafond zich in principe richten op die voorbijgangers, en liefst ook hen uitdagen tot een of andere vorm van interactie met het werk; het is een uitdaging hun aandacht te trekken terwijl ze 'voorbij gaan'...

• Het Plafond biedt informatie aan de voorbijgangers over ieder project en de maker daarvan in de vorm van ‘raamteksten’ – geschreven door kunsthistoricus Guus Vreeburg (Het Plafond); deze teksten worden – in het Nederlands en in het Engels – ook gepubliceerd op de website van Het Plafond

• bij Het Plafond gaat het natuurlijk in de eerste plaats om projecten op en ‘óver’ het 25 m2 grote en 3.5 meter hoge plafond van de ruimte – 'de meest verwaarloosde plek van ieder interieur!'; natuurlijk is ook de ruimte daaronder beschikbaar, zij het dat die dus bruikbaar moet blijven als onderdeel van het appartement

Het Plafond - the space

• Het Plafond is named after its ceiling (Dutch: ‘plafond’): 25 m2 , and 3.5 m high; the space itself is 4.85 x 5 meters, and is essentially empty

• this ceiling, and the space’s floor and left hand side wall are bare, grey concrete; against the right hand wall stands a black upright piano; the space’s back wall is plastered white – a plane of approx. 3.5 x 2.2 meters; half hidden behind it and above it is an office space

• Het Plafond’s space has good visibility from outside: its front faces the sidewalk with a huge shop window; the right hand wall has an extra window, though much narrower

• Het Plafond is not a ‘white box’ space, but part of an apartment – people live & work here! accessibility to the apartment is through Het Plafond’s space

• note that Het Plafond’s big shop window and its white back wall face due South; in bright and sunny conditions, Het Plafond’s interior, seen from outside, is relatively dark; also, most of the urban surroundings will be reflected in the window; this poses an extra challenge for the onlookers and thus for artists presenting a work here…

• due to its openness towards the street / the sidewalk, Het Plafond has no fixed opening hours; Het Plafond, as a matter of fact, opens up to the world outside 24 hours per day; in special cases, presentations may be viewed from inside as well – on appointment only

• every day, many people pass by along the sidewalk of Gedempte Zalmhaven – on their way to work, or during a leisure stroll; after almost ten years of Het Plafond’s existence they know from experience that there is usually something interesting to be seen there; many of them take regular peeks through Het Plafond’s windows…

• that is why we find it important that any presentation at Het Plafond is reaching out to these passers by, maybe even challenging them into any kind of interaction with the presentation; it is therefore important to catch people’s attention while merely ‘passing by’…

• Het Plafond informs its passers by and other visitors on each project and its maker through so called ‘window texts’ – written by art historian Guus Vreeburg (Het Plafond); these texts also get published – both in Dutch and in English – on Het Plafond’s website

• of course, Het Plafond’s 25 m2 and 3.5 m high ceiling is the main focus of attention for any project; we look forward to projects located at the ceiling and calling attention to it – it usually being the most neglected space in any interior…; apart from the ceiling, the rest of the space may be used as well, be it that it should always be able to function as part of the apartment
